Is The Philippines A Dangerous Place?
Is The Philippines A Dangerous Place?
We get a lot of questions from people about safety of foreign expats in the Philippines. Why do the houses look like prisons? Why do they have barbed wire and broken glass on top of their property walls? Do we ever feel unsafe?

Some places is safety precaution like In Israel the houses built with home defense against war for example the houses has sealed room just incase of nuclear hits the house. Every building has an shelter.

  • @JamesKay007

I'd have to disagree with walls around a house is mostly for privacy. In America it may be that walls are for privacy but in the Philippines every wall I've seen has pointed spikes, barbed wire or shared glass on top of them. They're there for a purpose and that is to keep criminals and robbers out of your house. There's no police here patroling the streets. You'll see them come out after something happens. By then its too late.We have the 2nd amendment in America where any law abiding citizen can own a gun. In the Philippines, foreigners are not allowed to own gun's and I doubt many Filipinos own a gun either.

There are dangerous places in every country. The western part of Mindanao like Marawi is not a safe place for foreigners to go to especially white people because they really stand out from the Filipino people. I've never had any problems in the Philippines even when I've been out and about. Hey it's better to be safe by locking the gates because should something ever happen then you would be wishing that the gats were locked. The neighbors have dogs so they're the early warning system for our security. It's also nice to have security guards in the subdivision who are armed. It helps to deter some criminals.

Absolutely there are problems everywhere. I think the real differences is the support services when things go wrong. Guys are used to being able to call 911 in Mayberry and get help…guys the ambulance service in the Philippines is basically a taxi if available at all…most use a trike to try to the ER, once you get there you better have your ATM card ready…no cash no service…car accidents will mean a trip to the police station most likely and no English will be used unless speaking directly to you….learn the barangay complaint process if you are having issues, it’s not as simple as going to the Police….fire services are questionable. 1960s and 70s trucks are still in use in the provinces. It’s more about fixing your own problems than a safety net or parachute to fall into.

Risk is always there, the active threat is dependent on how you mitigate those risks and expose yourself to them. Don’t walk around informal settlements like you own the place. Don’t assume every person is your friend. Don’t hand your 1K camera to a bunch of street kids to film you buying a coconut. Learn to say no. The real risk that you can mitigate is the natural disasters and lack in response resources / infrastructure. Especially on islands where there isn’t much to begin with. Guys who are from the west aren’t used to weeks or months no power when a typhoon comes through. There are absolutely no go zones in the Philippines. To say there isn’t for a foreigner isn’t the route to go. It’s the Moro Islamic groups in Mindanao and Sulu. The New People’s Army, communist rebels, are in a verity of islands…

Hey Scott Cecile Liam & Chanel! Good insight and interesting perspective on a necessary topic. Video image is fine! Valuable contribution from Cecile's perspective too. A "Big Picture" view and outlook that you both share, covers the majority of possible issues. Marker 44 is generic and universally applicable. Your narrative style has vastly improved and involving Cecile is an entertaining dynamic. I like the savings binder you use; where can someone purchase one? Similar to what my Mom did but without the binder. She had a special way of folding and grouping bills until they totaled $100. To Asians, having the money physically accessible gives them the feeling of security and eases their mind. Enjoyable video! Good fortune, health, fun and happiness to everyone. Stay safe
